Description

The Concept of Marriage in Islamic Tradition [1] Islamic tradition has always put a strong emphasis on marriage, making it a religious duty for those who can afford it. Since the family is the fundamental unit of the Muslim ummah (the Muslim nation/community of the faithful), marriage is the seed from which Muslim families are established and, therefore, the main mechanism of reviving and preserving Muslim society(ies). Along these lines, the Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said, "marry among you and proliferate because I will be boasted by your number with other prophets on the Day of Resurrection." (1) Consequently, marriage has a tremendous religious status in Islamic teachings, so much so that it is sometimes called "half the faith," and even recommended for those who cannot afford it. Thus, the Qur'an encourages the facilitation of marriage for those who are financially or socially disadvantaged, equating this facilitation and assistance to performing other virtual Islamic religious rituals and practices.
